Rose Pastor Stokes was born in the Russian Empire in 1879, made her way to the Lower East Side, met society figure J.G. Phelps Stokes while he was working at University Settlement, married into his fortune, and put her newfound resources into the fight for workers’ rights. Adam Hochschild’s new biography offers a timely, detailed view of activists proposing radical social change in the face of a recalcitrant status quo.
