Turtles Leave to Winter in a Warmer Spot! Richard (our Turtle Expert) Asks for Donations for Wild Turtle Emergency!

Ted: “For new gardeners who have never had the privilege, this is the glorious day when (someone younger than me) climbs down into the pond (mostly pumped out for the event) and hands the turtles up and are put into bins. Then a  procession proceeds with the bins on a dolly to my building a block and a half south, where the turtles are passed into the large tank. They live there for the winter months. The fish in the pond winter over under the ice in a hibernation-like state called umbration. They stop eating altogether and hover near the bottom.”

Richard, our neighbor who his cared for our garden turtles, nursed sick ones back to health, and has mentored me for years, asked that this announcement from the organization he helped start be forwarded as widely as possible.

These turtles represent seven species of mud turtles native to Mexico — including dozens of critically endangered Vallarta Mud Turtles (Kinosternon vogti), the most imperiled turtle species in the Western Hemisphere.

Thanks to the immediate response from more than 60 donors and institutions, urgent help is on the way to support the veterinarians and animal care teams at Zoológico Guadalajara. They have already begun providing lifesaving treatment, disease testing, and specialized care for the survivors. While hundreds of turtles have already perished, your support is helping ensure that many others now have a chance to recover and, one day, return to the wild.
